AMSTERDAM

The Netherlands

Discover Ruby will be available for boarding from 2:00 PM.

 

We begin our southbound journey in Amsterdam, a city of 90 islands linked by a canal system so elaborate it is itself recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site!  After dinner, you will have the opportunity to stroll through the lively nightlife and streets of downtown, including the Red Light District or the Amsterdam Casino, at your leisure.

 

Discover Ruby will remains anchored in Amsterdam overnight.

Shortly after embarkation, our adventure will begin with a charming boat tour of Amsterdam – exploring the city’s elaborate canal system, sailing under the many bridges that connect the 90 islands that form this unique capital city. Our panoramic boat ride will highlight many of the city’s signature sights, such as the Museum District, the Royal Palace, Dam Square, the Train Station, Anne Frank’s House and the Amstel River with its traditional houseboats.

 

Our delightful canal tour will end at the floating Flower Market, with ample free time to wander amongst all the colorful, unique and interesting flower selections found there.  This 159-year-old market sits on houseboats along the Single Canal, the most historic canal in the city.  After our visit, we will return to the ship for dinner.

AMSTERDAM

The Netherlands

Today, the ship will remain in Amsterdam through early afternoon, for your continued discovery of this iconic city at your leisure.

 

Discover Ruby departs Amsterdam at 2:00 PM, with scenic cruising through the Dutch countryside enroute to Düsseldorf.

After breakfast, a comfortable and brief coach ride will take us to Zaanse Schans, a scenic village famous for its towering windmills.  After taking in the iconic backdrop, we will have free time to wander through this village where time seems to have stood still. 

 

Following the windmills, we will travel to a local cheese factory, where we will learn how traditional Dutch Gouda cheese is made.  Our palate will be treated to a flavorful sample of several locally made cheese varieties – with the opportunity to purchase some Gouda as well and many other handmade delicacies.

 

Our last stop of the day will be Marken, a picturesque village with a population of only 2,000.  Originally an island, it was connected to the continent by a dike system during the 1950s.  With its well-preserved, traditional green wooden houses and charming atmosphere, it will feel like stepping into a postcard.  After we soak up all the beauty Marken has to offer, we will return to our ship in early afternoon to enjoy lunch onboard.

DÜSSELDORF | COLOGNE

Germany

Today, we arrive in Germany. In the morning, our ship will dock briefly at the city of Düsseldorf, a short technical stop for guests starting today’s excursion here. Discover Ruby will then sail for the historic city of Cologne, arriving late in the afternoon.

 

Discover Ruby departs Cologne at 9:00 PM.

After breakfast, we will start our full-day adventure in Düsseldorf, the capital of the North Rhine & Westphalia State and one of the most important fashion capitals in the world.  Here, we will witness the transformation of what once was a historic port town into what is now a bustling new commerce center known as Media Hafen. We will be enveloped in the city’s luxury and grandeur while we stroll the stylish shopping streets such as Kö Strasse, passing by the glamorous Opera House.

 

Our stroll will continue onwards through the pedestrian streets of the Old City, where quaint cafes, restaurants and bustling bars serve as the perfect backdrop.  

 

A scenic drive will transport us to the 2,000-year-old city of Cologne, one of Germany’s largest cities and a cultural center, famous for its gilded medieval relics and sweeping river views. As the highlight of our panoramic tour, we will tour the famous Cologne Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage site, with its 157m-high twin spires, impressive gothic architecture, and colorful glass windows. Once our guided tour is complete, enjoy some free time to further explore Cologne on your own before heading back to the ship.

RÜDESHEIM

Germany

This morning, Discover Ruby sails through the beautiful and romantic Rhine Gorge, passing through a stretch recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site between Koblenz and our destination for today, Rüdesheim, arriving early afternoon.

 

Discover Ruby will depart Rüdesheim at 9:00 PM.

After a scenic ride through the local vineyards, the unique Winzerexpress mini train will transfer us to the top of the hills ­– a short journey to the one-of-a-kind Siegfried’s Mechanical Music Museum.  Here we will be delighted by the sounds of vintage, self-playing old-world German instruments reminiscent of Alice’s Wonderland.

 

Following our pleasant visit to the museum, we will stroll through the colorful city center, with the opportunity to taste some of the local wines, as well as the famous Rüdesheimer Coffee. From the city center, our next stop is one of the most important Riesling wineries in all of Germany.  Here, we will be treated to a delicious and memorable wine tasting experience, before returning to our ship for dinner.

MANNHEIM | SPEYER (Heidelberg)

Germany

After breakfast, our beautiful ship makes a brief technical stop in Mannheim to accommodate our tour departure, then continues on to Speyer, arriving just before lunchtime.

After breakfast, our beautiful ship will arrive at the vibrant city of Mannheim. Our tour of this lively city will include several points of interest including the University of Mannheim, the National Theater, St. Sebastian’s Church and the iconic Water Tower.  We will also enjoy a stroll through Luisenpark, one of the most beautiful parks in all of Germany.

 

Next stop on our adventure will be Heidelberg, a well-preserved medieval city nestled in the Neckar River Valley.  Here, we begin with the famous Heidelberg Castle and its splendid gardens, before we wander down to the Grand Terrace with its views of the Neckar River and Old Town.  Our discovery continues with a stroll through the beautiful Old Town, featuring the Karl-Theodor Bridge, the late-gothic Church of the Holy Spirit, and the Town Hall.

 

Our final stop today will be Speyer and its awe-inspiring, 1,000-year-old Romanesque Cathedral, officially known as the Cathedral of St. Mary and St. Stephen. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, it is the largest preserved Romanesque church in Europe; it is also the burial ground of eight Holy Roman Emperors and German Kings. The Old Town Gate, Memorial Church, and Transportation Museum are other highlights of our visit to this beautiful city.

STRASBOURG

France

Welcome to the beautiful capital of Alsace, Strasbourg.  This quaint town combines the best France and Germany have to offer, thanks to its immersion in both cultures and its location on the border.  This duality gives Strasbourg its unique and attractive character.

 

Discover Ruby departs from Strasbourg at 12:00 AM Midnight.

Our panoramic tour begins with the stunning Parc de l’Orangerie.  This slice of paradise with its breathtaking grounds is an unforgettable experience and highlight of the day.  From there we will pass by the European Council, the European Human Rights Court, and the European Parliament Building.

 

In the afternoon, we will take a wonderful walk from the Petite France District, the core of the area recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, to the Palace de la Republique.  We will encounter the canals, half-timbered Alsatian Historical Houses, the Gutenberg Monument and the Cathédral de Nôtre Dame de Strasbourg (with its famous astronomical clock).

 

A local winery will be the last stop of the day.  Here we will sample a variety of local French wines, before enjoying some free time strolling through the town’s shops and cafes.

BREISACH | BASEL

Switzerland

This morning, our ship will dock briefly in Breisach. After this short technical stop to accommodate our tour departure, the ship will spend a leisurely day sailing to Basel, arriving early evening.

 

Discover Ruby will remain docked in Basel overnight.

After breakfast, we start our tour in Breisach, gateway to the world-famous Alsatian Wine Villages. Alsace is famous for its 140km-long Wine Route with accompanying scenic vineyards. From Breisach, a short drive that will take us to Riquewihr, an iconic and well-preserved medieval village taken straight from a fairytale, with a long tradition of vineyards and wine making. Along our walking tour, we will admire the historic architecture and famous sights, such as the Dolder Gate and the amazing half-timber houses.

 

Our next stop will be Colmar, “The Capital of Alsatian Wine.”  Fortunately spared from the destructions of both the French Revolution and the Second World War, Colmar’s architectural landmarks reflect eight centuries of both Teutonic and Gallic Architecture.  Our stroll through the pedestrian streets takes us down to the Little Venice area, where you will be mesmerized by this ancient romantic town, plus a visit to a local winery to sample the region’s fine vintages.

A scenic drive brings us to Basel, where we rejoin the ship for our final dinner onboard.

After dinner, our guides will lead a walking tour of Switzerland’s cultural capital. Highlights of our Old Town walk include the 500-year-old Basel City Hall and Münster Cathedral.

After a final breakfast onboard, our cruise has concluded, and we say goodbye to Discover Ruby. For those who have opted for post-cruise extensions, convenient transfers from the pier to the airport have been arranged.

After breakfast, we will enjoy a scenic drive to the city of Rotterdam, known for its contemporary architecture. One of the world’s great, most historic ports, Rotterdam has been one of the benchmarks for European trade for centuries.

 

Our tour continues to Delft, home of the famous blue porcelain as well as the renowned Dutch Master painter Vermeer. We will visit De Delftse Pauw, producer of the famous porcelain; the New Church of Delft, traditional burial place of the House of Orange, Holland’s royal family; and beautiful Old Town Delft.

 

We then travel to The Hague, where the Dutch Parliament resides. Our tour includes the Peace Palace, home of the International Court of Justice; the stunning Mauritshuis Royal Picture Gallery; and the quaint Madurodam, a park that recreates famous Dutch landmarks and cities in miniature. Our final stop will be The Hague’s fishing port of Scheveningen, located along the North Sea, before we return to our hotel in Amsterdam.

Your morning is free to continue discovering Amsterdam at your leisure, with a prearranged transfer from your hotel to our ship in early afternoon.

Arrive in Zürich and transfer to your hotel. Enjoy a free day, to rest from your journey and explore the city as you wish.

After breakfast, we will enjoy a walking tour of Zürich, Switzerland’s largest city, visiting its most legendary places, monuments and historical sites. Discover the luxury along the exclusive Bahnhofstrasse shopping street; explore the historic heart of the city, romantic Old Town, with businesses showcasing the world-famous Swiss watches; and marvel at the beautiful Fraumünster Church, with its famous Chagall stained windows.

 

We then depart for Lucerne, located almost 2 hours by road from Zurich. This beautiful city is located at the northern end of Lake Lucerne, at the mouth of the river Reuss.  Here, our tour explores the excellently preserved medieval city center, with highlights such as the Lion Monument; Old Town, with its fine half-timber structures with painted fronts; the baroque Jesuit Church; and the famous Chapel Bridge, the oldest covered bridge in Europe, built in 1333. Following our walk, we will board our motorcoach for the return to our hotel in Zürich.
